About the Kent 11 Plus

Kent runs the largest fully-selective county system in England — 32 grammar schools, all admitting on the strength of the county-administered Kent Test. Children sit one test in September of Year 6 and the standardised result is used across the county's schools.

Above the county qualifying score, several 'super-selective' Kent grammars — the Judd School, Tonbridge Grammar, the Skinners' School and Dartford Grammar among them — set a substantially higher rank and admit largely on test score rather than catchment. Most other Kent grammars use a qualifying score plus distance and oversubscription rules.

Grammar schools in Kent

The Kent County Council — the Kent Test (PESE) Kent runs a single county-administered test (the Procedure for Entry to Secondary Education). One result is used across the county's grammar schools; the super-selective schools then require a higher rank.

Test structure & subjects

EnglishMathsVerbal ReasoningNon-Verbal Reasoning

The Kent Test uses GL Assessment papers covering English, Mathematics, and Reasoning (Verbal and Non-Verbal). There is also a written exercise, which isn't scored directly but can be used in headteacher assessments and appeals.

Papers are multiple-choice, timed, and standardised by age. A child who narrowly misses the qualifying score can be referred to a headteacher assessment panel — check the current-year process on Kent County Council's admissions pages.

How to prepare for Kent 11+

Cover all four areas — English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. For the super-selective schools, accuracy under time pressure is what separates children, so timed practice matters more than exotic content.

GL Assessment-style past papers are highly representative of the Kent Test. Add some short written-exercise practice so the writing task isn't a surprise on the day.

Kent 11+ — common questions

Does one Kent Test cover every Kent grammar school?

Yes — you sit one county test and the result is shared across Kent's grammar schools you list on the secondary application. The super-selective schools then require a higher rank than the county qualifying score.

What is a 'super-selective' Kent grammar?

Schools like the Judd, Tonbridge Grammar, Skinners' and Dartford Grammar admit mainly on test score rather than distance, so they require a rank well above the county qualifying threshold. The rest use qualifying plus oversubscription criteria.

Is the Kent Test the same as the Medway Test?

No — Medway is a separate authority with its own test. A child aiming at both Kent and Medway grammars usually sits both tests; check each authority's arrangements.

Can children outside Kent sit the Kent Test?

Yes — out-of-county children can register and sit the test. Distance is a major oversubscription factor for the non-super-selective schools when places are offered.
