Understanding the 11+

What is the 11 Plus exam?

The 11 Plus is a selective entrance exam taken by children in Year 6 (aged 10–11) to gain a place at a grammar school or selective secondary school in England. It's usually sat in September or October of Year 6.

The exam tests four core subjects: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English. Not all regions test all four — it depends on your local area and target school.

Know Your Format

GL Assessment vs CEM — what's the difference?

The two main exam boards test the same subjects but in very different ways. Knowing which one your child will sit changes how you should prepare.

GL Assessment
Most common
📋
Format: Separate papers per subject — one paper for Maths, one for VR, etc.
Timing: Each paper is independently timed, typically 20–50 minutes
Questions: Multiple choice, standard difficulty with clear question types
📍
Used in: Kent, Bucks, Herts, Essex, Lancashire, Trafford and many more
Best for: Children who can focus on one subject at a time
CEM
Growing usage
📋
Format: Mixed-subject papers — Maths and VR combined in one paper
Timing: Fast-paced, shorter time per question — speed is essential
Questions: Varied styles, some unfamiliar formats, harder to predict
📍
Used in: Bexley, some Birmingham schools, Gloucestershire, Dorset
Best for: Children who are fast, adaptable, and handle pressure well
